.how to: finding inspiration.

It's time to get real around these parts. You see, I've been doing some thinking about this here blog. As some of you may have seen on twitter last night, I've run out of inspiration. I sit down to write and NOTHING. Nada. Zilch. In fact...I don't even have very much motivation to write or find my inspiration. My creative thoughts have taken a hike.

So, what's a blogger to do when they don't have a cute kid to take pictures of or a house to make little crafty things for? What does one write about when they don't travel to other countries or have witty stories to share?

I have no idea.

Some of you guys responded to my whining on twitter and gave me a word or two of advice. Which is fantastic. I'm always wanting to learn from others...or at the very least to hear that I'm not alone.

I thought I'd ask you readers what you do when you find your mind is nice big blank sheet. Do you have specific websites that bring your inspiration back to life? Do you take a step away from writing for a while? Do you power through it? Does something as simple as taking a walk or listening to a certain song snap you out of it? Do you have an idea notebook?

What do YOU do?

Feel free to comment (or email!) and help a girl out.

  1. I know what you are feeling, I've been there quite recently. The best thing to do is to step back for a bit and regather yourself. Think about what got you into blogging in the first place. Reminisce about all your first ideas and all the wonderful things you wanted to create and keep track of when you decided you wanted to start blogging. There's so much out there in the blog world sometimes it's hard to keep focused and to listen to our inner voice and what we really want to do creatively.

Just step back for a bit and think...it will all come back :)

    1. You are SO right, Irela! Taking a step back will definitely help me clear my head and remember WHY I love to write in the first place...it has already given me some perspective! When I focus too much on blogs and the internet, I feel so overwhelmed by it all. Thanks for the advice! :)

  2. I keep a journal with me all the time. Usually when I sit down to write something it's like I put pressure on myself and then it's impossible to write. I think of ideas when I'm out and about but if I don't write them down they disappear. I have a page that's just a list of post ideas that I can turn to whenever I'm stuck...and I thought of them all at unexpected times.

    1. I think that was definitely a problem of mine! I didn't have a notebook with me so by the time I got to a pen and paper, the idea had vanished. (I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who has short-term-memory-loss. ;) ) Thanks for the idea, Marla!

  3. I read other blogs and look to Pinterest for inspiration. Also, if you just need a topic you could check out some link-ups because they tell you exactly what to post and bring in more traffic. For example, I've been doing Weekly Wishes at thenectarcollective.com and it is just blogging a list of things you want to accomplish each week. There are a lot of other ones out there, too, but Weekly Wishes is all I'm doing right now so it's all I can think of at the moment, haha.

    1. That's a great idea! It's hard not to feel inspired when you focus on the beauty around you.

  5. I feel like my inspiration comes in waves, too. Kaela Moore mentioned the Daily Post's Daily Prompt (http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2013/08/19/daily-prompt-activity/) for some inspiration. You might check it out!

  6. My inspiration to blog comes in waves. I actually took a summer break from my blog, without really meaning to! It was nice to step back from the pressure of capturing and publishing everything happening lately. Now that August is here, I feel refreshed and ready to start posting again. :)

    1. I had noticed you hadn't posted in a while. :) I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one though...summer is especially brutal for writing because all I want to do is go outside and enjoy the weather and not worry about it!
