from now until forever

This year has been full of weddings for me and my sister. Half our Saturdays are spent with busy brides and nervous grooms. They're spent calming nerves and easing minds. They're spent snapping pictures and saving memories and capturing details. No matter how many weddings we shoot, I never get over it. I never get tired of seeing brides and grooms giddy with excitement, their happiness bubbling over on to everyone they see that day.

I love it. I freakin' love love! It's contagious and happy and beautiful and explosive and powerful and gentle and strong.

It's a feeling that cannot be compared, but more than that it's one of the most important choices we'll ever make.

If there's any one piece of advice I could give to the happy couples, would be this:

Never stop choosing your spouse

I believe C.S. Lewis said it best in his book Mere Christianity:

I choose you, Kyle Steven.
Today and every day.
I choose to love you even when I don't feel very loving.
I choose to fight for you and what we have together.

....and because this video never ceases to make me happy. :)

what's the best piece of advice you've been given (in marriage or just in life!)?

  1. forgive, forgive, forgive. yourself as often as you forgive others. I've been working on my words in my marriage, attempting to exude gentleness and patience...to characteristics that do not come naturally for me. Beautiful post!

    1. Yes! Forgiveness is key...especially forgiving yourself. It's so hard to not only *say* we forgive, but to actually let it go and forget about it. Definitely something I struggle with as well. Great reminder, Kaylan!

  2. This is really precious and I couldn't agree more that it is a conscious decision to love someone. My boyfriend and I have been long distance for basically all of our relationship and it has been really hard but also really highlights what you say here. Love is something you do as well as something you feel.

    1. Eesh. long distance would be so, so hard! I definitely think it can make a couple stronger. They have to go through so much just because of distance. It's a good thing and a bad thing.

  4. Oh gosh! I love this post especially because I'm a newlywed and I'm still learning things. Also, I love anything C.S.Lewis and I couldn't have picked a better quote myself.

    1. I'm not technically a newlywed anymore, and I feel like I'm still learning things. haha! Marriage is one of those things...you never really quit learning ways to make it better.

  5. THIS post is everything I think about when it comes to love and choosing your spouse. I write a Letters To My Future Husband series on my blog, and this is exactly what I'll do when I meet him someday. :)

  6. Wow, this quote is really amazing and so incredibly on point. I'm not one to get too gushy or overly-poetic about love, but I can definitely attest to the fact that it's a choice and that choice requires work. Those types of love quotes I can totally get down with! ;)

    1. I think people get too worried about romanticizing love and therefore don't like "non mushy" quotes, but really love is a wonderful thing all by itself...quotes like C.S. Lewis, which perfectly describe marriage, are better in my book as well!

  7. I totally agree! I choose my husband every single day. Mere Christianity is one of my favourite books. I keep going back to it over and over to gain inspiration and wisdom. X Jane http://janeheinrichs.blogspot.com
