the bookshelf and the garage sale score

you guys! i did it! i *finally* finished our bookshelf! it's been on my "home updates" list since forever, and i finally saved up enough and found the time to do it. eeeeee! can one love a bookshelf? i submit that they can!

it really didn't take too long to make once we figured out the sizing and spacing we wanted. once we figured that out, it was just cutting and staining. (p.s. if any of you know how to stain something and NOT get it all over yourself, please tell me your secrets!)

this is what i drew up the first time. we ended up going a little bit different, in order for the pieces to be as sturdy as possible. we ended up making it only six feet wide because it fit better on the wall. we used three 70" twin upright tracks and 13 brackets from lowes. three 1x12x8's and one 1x14x3 (to hold the record player) voila!

in other news, this weekend we shot a wedding and it involved lemurs, a pig, giraffes, and a penguin. that's my kind of wedding!
i also scored an awesome chair for our living room this weekend. for $15. FIFTEEN DOLLARS. i know i should want to reupholster it, but i actually love the crazy floral. it's just perfect.

have any of you guys seen edge of tomorrow? it was an epic film. i hadn't seen a preview or poster or anything for it when we went, so that was kind of fun. we ended up seeing it twice in one week. yes...we are sci-fi nerds like that. (and also, tom cruise) and while we're on the topic of movies, does anyone else find planet of the apes absolutely terrifying? i mean, i love the movies, but they are so scary!

i plan on sharing more pictures of the apartment and projects i've been working on very, very soon. (lots of good stuff to come)

okay, i'm off to organize my spices (i lead an exciting life. :D)

    1. thank you, kaylan! it's so easy to do! the hardest part was mounting the tracks on the wall, and that even wasn't too terrible. you should definitely make one!

  6. Oh my gosh, Tye and I will have to be married a lot longer before we ever attempt to make a bookshelf - hanging our gallery wall 6 months in was a real test haha :) It looks amazing!! I am a sci-fi nerd right there with you, so I just put that movie on my list...and I pretty much only watch Planet of the Apes when it's the one with Mark Wahlberg. Because...Mark Wahlberg ;)

    1. hahah it definitely is a "fun" project to do together. who knew searching for a stud in the wall and trying to hang something straight could prove to be so challenging for couples?? haha

      and yes. mark wahlberg. always.
